Manages the AFMA awards program held annually at the fall conference. Promotes the program throughout the year to both members and sponsors. Solicits nominations from among members for each award category. Manages the procedure for nominations and judging. Coordinates trophy, plaque and certificate production for presentation of awards at the fall conference.

Education & Training Committee

Identifies, develops and promotes learning opportunities for people involved in floodplain management and hazard mitigation. Partners with state and federal agencies to offer in-depth courses on topics related to the organization’s mission. Assists regional representatives in providing training opportunities at the local level. Works in cooperation with the Technical Committee to develop and finalize agendas for the annual spring workshop and the annual fall conference.

Legislation Committee

Represents floodplain management interests at all levels of government within the state. Works with local floodplain managers and government councils to develop and propose ordinances that help achieve a flood safe community. Maintains awareness of legislative issues that might have an impact on floodplain management. Testifies at legislative hearings as floodplain management experts. Recommends legislation as necessary. Coordinates with state and federal agencies to determine common issues and communicates this information to legislators.

Communications Committee

Supports the entire organization through electronic and print communications. Maintains the AFMA web site in cooperation with the web site contractor. Responsible for soliciting information to include in Flood Zone, the official AFMA newsletter. Supports other committees by providing assistance as needed.

Professional Development Certification Committee

Established by AFMA charter to provide a greater visibility of floodplain management as a profession. Manages the Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM) program by developing rules and regulations that members must follow to achieve and maintain certification. Administers closed-book exam and establishes procedures to evaluate applicants knowledge of the NFIP, floodplain management, and hazard mitigation. Defines educational programs and training opportunities that qualify as continuing education credits (CECs) toward recertification

Technical Committee

Monitors changes in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and guidelines set forth by the Association of State Floodplain Managers (ASFPM). Responsible for keeping AFMA membership up-to-date on new and modified technical issues. Networks with national experts and recruits them to speak at AFMA sponsored events. Works in cooperation with the Education & Training Committee to develop and finalize agendas for the annual spring workshop and the annual fall conference.
