Registration is underway for this annual event you don't want to miss! The spring workshop is a mid-year technical supplement for the seasoned floodplain manager and serves as a great introduction to floodplain management for those new to the business. Class workshops cover a variety of topics and typically include the following:
  • How to read a flood map.

  • Common community floodplain management problems and solutions.

  • Floodplain management best practices.

  • Ordinance enforcement procedures.

  • And much, much more!

  • CFMs! Don’t miss your mid-year opportunity for continuing education credits (CECs).

  • New to floodplain management? This event is a GREAT introduction to FEMA and floodplain management basics. We strongly encourage you to attend the spring workshop before attending the AFMA fall conference.

From the Chair
Happy National Flood Safety Awareness Week!
Registration for the AFMA spring workshop is underway and I am happy to report that many of your peers have already registered to attend. Of note, we are a little more than two weeks into the process and the current number of people registered is at an all-time high.
I mentioned last month that FEMA is discontinuing its paper map program in October. We have more details about this new policy and a FEMA representative will be on hand at the spring workshop to answer your questions. Please make plans to join us!
Approximately 30 people are taking part in the NFIP class being taught this week in Conway by our own Mike Borengasser. At the end of the course, several of these individuals will sit for the exam to become certified floodplain managers (CFMs). We wish them well and I encourage everyone to attend FEMA-sponsored courses when the opportunity is available.
Considering we had another round of frozen precipitation in parts of the state last week, it’s hard to even think that spring is just around the corner. And so is the rainy season. Be ready! Perhaps the luck of the Irish will favor us this year.
