As we complete the first two months of the New Year, our thoughts turn toward warmer weather and the annual AFMA spring technical workshop. Now is the time to review your floodplain master plan, to clean your ditches and to promote mitigation efforts.
And that’s what we’ll talk about at the spring technical workshop. I am pleased to announce that registration is now open for this annual event that will take place at the Jacksonville Community Center April 29-30. Join us for a day-and-a-half workshop that covers a variety of topics you won’t want to miss! |
Once again we have negotiated special rates for AFMA members at local hotels. But you will have to hurry! Rooms are limited. Click here to begin your workshop registration process now. |

If you spend time on the AFMA web site you have no doubt noticed the industry calendar. It is THE most comprehensive online calendar you will find. We know that for many of our members the duty of floodplain manager is shared with another city task for which you may be responsible. As an example, we know some of you are also public works directors and some of you are in charge of your local water departments. |
As a service to you, we have included dates and locations of non-AFMA events that are sure to be of interest as you execute your “other” non-floodplain-related duties. I hope that you find this industry calendar useful and refer to it often. |
One such event I would like to call to your attention is the upcoming week-long NFIP course in Conway held annually by FEMA and the Arkansas Natural Resources Commission (ANRC). It’s a great introduction to floodplain management and a CFM exam session will be held at the end of the class. |
I look forward to spring. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that 2010 will be a rather quiet year in the floodplain business. While it’s certainly nice to be prepared, it’s that much nicer to not have to deal with raging floodwaters coursing through the veins of your community. Perhaps Mother Nature will give us a break. |
