CFMThe Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM) program was created by AFMA to raise and maintain the professional standards of those individuals that manage floodplains, wetlands and watersheds within the state of Arkansas. The program is designed to certify competency with the basic principles of sound floodplain management as mandated and encouraged by the NFIP.

The program is a great way to promote flood safe communities and the professionals that make it happen.

Board Elections at Fall Conference

ElectionsDuring the 2008 business meeting, positions on the AFMA Board of Directors will become vacant and immediately available through election. Any full member in good standing of the Arkansas Floodplain Management Association is eligible to run for office. Available positions include:

Vice Chairman Northwest Region Representative
Secretary Southwest Region Representative
Treasurer Northeast Region Representative
Central Region Representative Southeast Region Representative

In accordance with the AFMA Constitution, the current vice chairman automatically becomes the chairman for the next biennial period. The current chairman becomes the past chairman for the next biennial period as well. Board members serve for a period of two years. The next election will be held at the 2010 Fall Conference.

Flood events have transitioned from spring into summer and there doesn’t seem to be any relief in sight. The nation’s attention has turned to the Midwest as it did in 1993 to witness the devastation of seldom seen proportions.
There is no better time than now to be informed and involved in floodplain management. Although Arkansas got only a small taste of what our neighbors in the Missouri River Valley are experiencing, it could indeed easily happen to us.
Truly floodplain management has emerged among the most important jobs in this still infant century. Such prominence of our industry demands an increased need for education, awareness and preparedness.
By the end of this summer we will all have plenty to discuss. The 2008 AFMA Fall Conference in Hot Springs is just the forum for each of us to share our trials and tribulations of what has turned out to be a heavy year of flooding.
Hosted at the Embassy Suites Hotel September 21 - 24, the 2008 AFMA Fall Conference is our premiere event and one that you do not want to miss. I am pleased to announce that registration is now open.
We have a complete schedule of speakers ready to bring you up-to-date on the latest floodplain management news and information. This year we are featuring a unique field session in place of our traditional Monday afternoon breakout sessions.
Join us for a guided tour of hydroelectric dams in Garland County, complemented by an exclusive look at flood control and prevention measures initiated by the city of Hot Springs- including their new state-of-the art Emergency Response Center.
Additional highlights of the 2008 Fall Conference include the AFMA awards luncheon where communities, individuals, corporations and agencies that excel in the field of floodplain management are recognized.

Whether you are renewing your certification or seeking to become a certified floodplain manager for the first time, this is your one-source location for applications and forms you need to complete the process.
There is so much information to share and I hope that each of you will join floodplain managers from across the state as we gather in Hot Springs. This promises to be an exciting event.
While 2008 has turned out to be a complete opposite of 2007, we can thank our continuing education, vigilant awareness and non-stop preparedness that makes us ready for any storm that Mother Nature sends our way.
