Managing Floodplain Development through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP)
In cooperation with FEMA, the Arkansas Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Division (formerly the Arkansas Natural Resources Commission) offers a free week-long course on the NFIP and floodplain management designed to provide an organized training opportunity for officials that are responsible for administering their local floodplain management ordinances.
Topics covered include the NFIP as well as:
- Concepts of floodplain management.
- Maps and studies.
- Ordinance administration.
- The relationship between floodplain management and flood insurance.
The course is designed for those officials with limited floodplain management experience. Typical attendees may include:

Exam for Certification as a Floodplain Manager in Arkansas (CFM?)
Materials presented in this week-long course serve as an excellent resource for individuals preparing to become a CFM. The examination is typically offered in the afternoon on the last day of the course.
